What is the difference between a dental implant and a post?

The situation when a tooth breaks down is always unpleasant, and also causes a lot of questions and not only a headache, but also a toothache. In some cases, a broken tooth can be restored using materials to restore the volume of the lost part of the tooth, but this is only if it is broken within the enamel. In other situations, when the tooth has broken to the nerve, under the gum, or below the level of the bone, it is necessary to carry out manipulations to restore and strengthen the root, and if this is not possible, then replace the root with an implant. Criticality levels are discussed in more detail in this article.

What is a post and what is an implant: the difference between them

штифтThe very first and main difference between the post and the implant is the method of attachment and purpose.

A post is a restoration component that is used to restore a decayed tooth. A post is a rod that can be made individually from metal (gold, or chrome cobalt), as well as fiberglass, zirconium, or titanium. It is installed in the tooth canal, after treatment and filling, allowing to save the root of the tooth, provided that the root is not damaged by caries.

The implant, in turn, completely replaces the missing tooth root, therefore, the dental implantation procedure is more traumatic, time-consuming, and financially expensive.

When is it necessary to install only a crown?

If a living tooth has broken down before reaching the gums, and most of it has remained and can function, then a crown can be put on the tooth. To do this, it needs to be slightly ground under the necessary parameters and then the desired type of crown is set.

Post in the tooth: when is it necessary to install the post?

If the tooth is chipped in such a way that it touches the nerve, then in this case, after treating the tooth canals, it will be necessary to install a pin.

The algorithm for installing the post in the tooth is as follows:

  1. Canal cleaning and treatment;
  2. Installing the post in the gum;
  3. Restoration of a tooth stump and turning;
  4. Setting the crown.

This procedure will cost more than just installing a crown on a tooth, but it is about 2 times cheaper and faster than installing an implant.

Is it possible to install a post in a dead tooth?

The answer is yes, it is. If the tooth is already dead and broken at the level of the gums, then the channels will need to be treated. But before that, the doctor must evaluate whether he can hook the tooth crown onto the ledge (root). If this is not possible, then the tooth will need to be removed. From this follows that the result is influenced by the knowledge, skills, and experience of the doctor: what techniques for turning and preparing the tooth he owns. If the patient broke his tooth and went to a doctor who is not able to restore such teeth, then in most cases he will say that the tooth needs to be removed, although it can actually be saved.

To recover, the doctor must be familiar with the BOPT technique (biologically oriented preparation technique), as well as be able to extend the root endodontically and position 2-3 mm above the gum, heal the canals and install a post so that there is a ledge on which the crown can rest, then the tooth can be saved ( provided that the root is long, otherwise it will stick weakly to the bone and may become loose over time).

The algorithm for installing a post in a dead tooth is as follows:

  1. It is necessary to get the root of the tooth over the gum;
  2. Channel treatment;
  3. Installing the post in the tooth;
  4. Restoration of the stump;
  5. Tooth turning;
  6. Setting the crown.

It will already be more expensive to restore a broken dead tooth by this method, since more manipulations and a more experienced doctor who can restore the tooth without removal will be required here, which will save money on future work.

Installation of a post with a bone fracture

In this situation, you need a really experienced doctor who can orthodontically pull a tooth out of the bone in a few months. Then it will also be necessary to treat the channels, install the post and crown.

Pay attention! Not all doctors have mastered this recovery technique, so either look for a really experienced doctor, or prepare to remove and install the implant.

What is the advantage of root preservation and tooth restoration?

  • Significantly saved time compared to implants;
  • Decrease in morbidity;
  • Lower cost of the service compared to the implant;
  • Preservation of natural bone tissue, atrophy will not occur;
  • Using the BOPT technique will increase the thickness of the gums.

Summing up, we can conclude that on the strategic side, preserving the root of the tooth is much better, because it can easily serve you for 10-15 years, and then you need to install an implant that will last as much or even more.

Installation of an implant for a broken tooth

When the tooth root has broken, it cannot serve as the basis for the crown, cannot bear the entire chewing load and cannot be restored in any way, in which case it is most likely necessary to replace it with a titanium implant.

To do this, you can choose 3 paths:

  1. Remove a broken tooth and immediately put an implant.
  2. Remove the tooth and put the implant in 2-3 months.
  3. Remove the damaged tooth and put the dental implant after 6 months.

In all three cases, the bone volume will be different, and the more time passes, the more the bone will atrophy (decrease). And if the bone is not enough, then you will also have to undergo an operation to build bone tissue, which further increases the trauma of dental implantation.

According to biological parameters, the implant cannot hold the bone. Even with the placement of titanium implants, the bone will still gradually go away over time, so you will need to periodically see a doctor for an examination.
You can read more about implantation here.

Which is better to choose — a post or an implant?

If this is an isolated case (the root has broken – the rest of the teeth are there), in most cases it makes no sense to change it to an implant, since it will be faster and more reliable for the patient to cure the root, put a post, restore the stump and put the crown in. In addition, this is a more advantageous option when it comes to injuries, finances, and biology.
In other cases, it will be better to put a titanium implant.

Tip: Choose a doctor carefully, since restoring a broken tooth depends on his experience and abilities.
