Dental implantation: what is it and why is it needed

There is nothing better than your own teeth. But sometimes crisis situations occur, as a result of which one or several teeth can be lost. This can be due to illness, injury, improper care, or due to old age. To restore a tooth in such cases, dentistry in Riga offers a dental implant service.

What is an implant and how the installation occurs

Dental implantation is a method of tooth root restoration by implanting a titanium screw (implant) into the bone and installing a crown. Together they provide the perfect look for your tooth and serve for many years, like your own.

Most patients believe that a dental implant and a crown are the main components of successful implantation, but in fact, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Dental implantation includes 4 components: gum, bone, implant, and crown. They have a strong relationship and without one component dental installation will be impossible.

For example, you want to hang a picture, but in order to do this, you need at least a wall, wallpaper, a screw and the picture itself. The implantation of teeth has a similar situation, where the wall is the bone, the wallpaper is the gum, the screw is the implant and the picture plays the role of a crown. That is, to hang a picture on the wall, we need to make sure that the wall is strong, even and able to withstand the load. If it does not meet our requirements, then we begin to concrete, strengthen, level it and so on. We will need to do the same manipulations with bone tissue. If it is smaller than necessary, then it will have to be built up.

If the wallpaper has a tired look and does not sufficiently cover the wall, in our case we are talking about the gum that protects the bone and the implant, then it will be necessary to change the type of gum and tighten it, not only to restore the protective function, but also to give an aesthetic look to your smile.

In the end, we only have to properly tighten the screw and hang a picture that you will enjoy every day.

Dental implant design

A dental implant consists of three parts: a screw,  an abutment, and a crown. The dental crown is directly fixed on the abutment, which the patient selects together with the implantologist. It can be a ceramic crown, a cermet crown or a zirconia crown. Differences between dental crowns can be found in this article.

Age restrictions

Initially, dental implants were invented for people of the older generation, aged 55+, who actively lost their teeth. But now, everyone installs dental implants. But still, the only age limit is a trait of 18-19 years. Up to this point, the dental implant will not be possible to be installed, since the body has not yet fully formed and tooth rudiments may still be present.

Dental bridge and replacement of the entire dentition

In cases where you need to restore 3-5 teeth in a row, the doctor uses a dental bridge. This is a design of two implants that are screwed into the gums and the intermediate teeth that are interconnected. Thus, in order not to install 5 dental implants, it will be enough to install a bridge-like structure of 5 crowns and two implants.

With the complete replacement of the entire dentition of 14 teeth, as a rule, it is enough to install 4-6 implants in order to fully restore the chewing function.

When is an implant necessary?

As in any business, the sooner you install a dental implant - the better. Since, after tooth loss, the bone tissue begins to become thinner over time, which as a result can lead to the inability to install the implant. To restore bone tissue, you will need time, surgical interventions and, accordingly, more money. Therefore, it is advisable to sign up for dental implants immediately after tooth loss.
