Why implants do not take root or are loose: FAQ on implants

Dental implantation is a rather complex and painstaking process that requires high precision and responsibility, both on the part of the doctor and the patient. Due to the high invasiveness, as well as invasion into the human body, problems with dental implants can arise, as well as a number of other issues. Let's take a look at the most popular ones.

Why is the implant loose

    Why is the implant loose
    There are several reasons why a dental implant can be loose. And the first thing that should be taken into account is the period of time after which you felt the mobility of the structure.

    1. Implant loosens immediately after implantation
      If after the operation you feel the implant swaying, this is not yet a reason for worry. This sensation may occur due to the fact that the bone after implantation is still quite weak and soft, so you need to wait a little until it gets stronger. Also, the implant can loosen due to the fact that the doctor has drilled too large a hole in the bone, but over time it will tighten.
    2. The implant is loose after a few weeks/months
      If the loosening persists for several weeks, this is most likely a sign of implant rejection or soft tissue (gum) has formed instead of bone for some reason. Such a situation may be caused by non-compliance with the norms for reducing risks on the part of the patient, namely, after implantation, one cannot smoke, drink, as well as play sports and go to baths.
      In any case, you will need to contact a doctor, where he will already be able to determine what is the reason and what the next steps should be: wait out this period or change to a new implant.
    3.  The implant is loose after a year or more after installation
      Here it is important to determine what exactly is moving: only the dental crown or the entire complex (crown + implant).
      In the first case, due to the fact that the crown has unscrewed, it can create a slight backlash, and you may feel loosening. The solution to the problem is to screw the crown back on. There is nothing wrong with that and it will not take long.

    Why does the dental implant not take root?

    If the implant does not take root, then this may be due to several aspects. Some of them can be controlled, others, alas, not.

    The controlled reasons why the implant did not take root include those cases that depend on the doctor or the patient.

    The most important thing that an implantologist should have is a base of knowledge and skills:

    • planning and diagnostics, the examination of the human body;
    • correct selection of dental implant;
    • staging and prosthetics according to the protocol;
    • strict adherence to asepsis (sterility);
    • correct drilling technique.

    After the successful installation of the implants, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the patient. And, as mentioned above, after implantation, it is advisable to refrain from:

    • smoking, as this reduces bone nutrition with essential trace elements;
    • drinking alcohol;
    • active sports and physical activity, since due to accelerated blood circulation, the pressure in the vessels increases, and the implant may fall out because of this;
    • saunas, baths and other spa treatments due to overheating of the bone tissue.

    To understand whether the implant has taken root or not, it takes about 2-4 weeks. That is, if after a month you have no complaints, then everything is fine with you.
    Further, it is important not to disturb it for at least six months, so as not to accidentally break the implant or weaken the bone tissue around it.

    Force majeure (uncontrollable) circumstances do not directly depend on the doctor or patient. These factors can arise out of nowhere and cause serious harm to your health and directly affect the survival rate of the implant.

    How does a cheap implant differ from an expensive one?

    The main factor when choosing an implant should be the probability of its engraftment. Choosing a cheap implant, you run the risk of getting a poor quality construction, where titanium will have impurities of other materials that have low biocompatibility with the human body. Also, the surface of the implant (its coating) can be contaminated, which will directly affect the immune system and cause implant rejection.

    Why titanium implant?

    титановый имплантTitanium as well as zirconium are two biologically inert materials that take root best in the human body. They have high biocompatibility and the lowest probability that the metal will not take root in the body. All other materials, alas, conflict with the human body, cause inflammation, allergies, and are rejected by it.

    Why is the implant crooked?

    Not all implants are placed directly, as the placement method can be influenced by two aspects: the planning and the method of implant placement.

    Planning is an essential part of implantation. Depending on the location of the teeth and their roots, the doctor plans how the implant will stand and at what angle it is best to install it so that it does not interfere with other teeth and, at the same time, the finished result has high aesthetic indicators. Therefore, it is extremely important that the surgeon-implantologist also understands orthopedics or works closely with the orthopedist-prosthetist.

    Planning is also needed in order to determine the importance of the final look: if there is not enough bone, then you can find a way out and place the implant a little crooked, but then the tooth will lose its aesthetics, but leave all its functionality.

    There are two options for the staging method: analog and digital.

    The analog method of installing implants is carried out roughly "by eye", where everything depends on the skills and experience of the doctor. This installation method is much cheaper, but has the risks of miscalculation and the human factor.

    The digital method of installing the implant, also known as guided surgery, is more expensive. Installation of dental implants is carried out using a special mouth guard, for which modeling and all calculations were carried out in advance with an accuracy of a degree so that the implant is 100% installed in the correct position in relation to the crown. You can learn more about guided surgery here.

    That is, relative to other teeth, a dental implant may stand somewhat crooked, but the crown that is installed on top of the implant will stand correctly, providing all the necessary biological parameters.
